BIOGRAPHY OF WAFA SULTAN

Wafa Sultan was born on 1958 I Damascus, Syria. She is a vocal critic of islam. She is a Syrian-America psychiatrist from Alawi family. She resides in Los Angeles, California. She emigrated to the United States in 1989 and is now a naturalized citizen. Wafa Sultan has become notable since the September 11, 2001 attacks for her participation in Middle East political debate. Her essays have circulated widely and she also participates in some notable television appearance on Al-Jazeera and CNN. On February 21, 2006, she took part in Al Jazeera's weekly 90-minute discussion program The Opposite Direction. She spoke from Los Angeles, arguing with host Faisal al-Qassem together with Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli about Samuel P. Huntington's Clash of Civilizations theory. She was scolding Muslims for treating non-Muslims unequally and not recognize the accomplishments of non-Muslim society, while using its wealth and technology.
She believes that the trouble with Islam is deeply rooted in its teachings. Islam is not only a religion but also a political ideology that preaches violence and applies its agenda by force. She was listed in Time Magazine as 100 influential people in the world. Time Magazine stated that she’s influence flows from her willingness to express openly critical view on Islamic extremism that widely shared but rarely aired by other Muslims.


SUMMARY OF WAFA SULTAN’S CLIP

Based on this clip, we can summarize that Wafa Sultan is trying to make her own prediction toward Samuel P. Huntington's Clash of Civilizations theory. She said that the clash is between the mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, it is a clash between democracy and dictatorship, it is a clash between human right, on the other hand, it is a clash between those who treat women like beasts and those who treat them like human being what see today is not a clash of civilization do not clash, but compete. Actually, she tries to compare the Muslim people and western. She also mentions that Muslim who began using this expression is the one who began the clash of civilization. She misunderstands what Prophet Muhammad said. She said when the Muslims divided the people into the Muslim and non-Muslim, and called to fight the others until they believe to what themselves believe, they started this clash and began war. In order to stop war, they must re examine their Islamic book and curricular, which are full of calls for takfir and fighting the infidels. She said that she is secular human being and do not belief supernatural.

She mention also about the Jews that come from the tragedy (holocaust) and forced the world to respect them with their knowledge not with his terror and she come out with example that there is no single Jews who destroy a church and there is no single Jews who protest by killing people. But, Muslim defends their belief by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. Last but not least, she said that Muslim should ask them what they can do for humankind before they demand that humankind respect them.


COMMENT ON THIS VIDEO

After looking at this video, I can conclude that Wafa Sultan is a secular person. She make prediction based on her wills. Actually, I already discuss the book title The Clash of civilization by Samuel Huntington with a few friend and from that book what I can say is that the author analyse there will be a conflict between Islamic civilization and Western civilization in term of Muslim development especially focusing in aspect of nuclear, for example, Iran whereas what I can predict is that western are now feeling scared because Muslim country able to produce nucleur means that they no longer became super power and it give bad impact for them because they know Muslim population is wider and if they unite and against the western, for sure western civilization will collapse. Even though, the author know this will be happen, but he try to cover the reality with give credit to western civilization because he has to defend his own civilization right? So, in that sense, Wafa Sultan was to obsess with this concept and giving his idea within strong evidence. She just sees the advantages of western civilization rather than the reality that happen and looking bad toward Islamic civilization which is too rigid. Actually, I think she doesn’t know Islam very well. That is why she act this way, because if she really Muslim, she will not opposing Islam. For me, before want to talk something, you must really know what thing that you want to say. It is because, Wafa Sultan giving her view without doing research about Islam itself. There are contribution in many aspect in Islamic civilization for example in developing the knowledge for example during Abbasid era, there are ‘baitul hikmah’ so called as library in order to civilized the people and there are many Muslim scholars emerged, so how could she just said that Islamic civilization is primitive. This is too bias. If she said after the tragedy of holocaust, Jews make world respect them because of knowledge not by using terror, I disagree with this. I think they use terror because there is prove to show what happen in Palestine now. They have right to kill innocent people, is this called contribution? Persons who have knowledge? I don’t think so. I think actually, Wafa Sultan has her agenda and her agenda is to discredit Islam at all cost.
